Locked Rotor Torque and Starting Torque

Locked Rotor Torque and Starting Torque are two important torque concepts in motors or other rotating machinery. The difference between them is mainly reflected in the timing, size and significance of torque generation.
1. Locked Rotor Torque
Definition: Locked Rotor Torque refers to the maximum torque that the motor can generate when the rotor is stationary (i.e. not rotating) and the motor is powered at the moment of starting.
Features: When the rotor is not moving, the current of the motor will be very large, so the motor will generate a large initial torque.
Locked Rotor Torque usually occurs in the initial stage of motor starting.
The size of locked rotor torque is one of the maximum torques that the motor can withstand.
Significance: Locked rotor torque reflects the ability of the motor to overcome inertial load, starting torque and other factors during starting.
2. Starting Torque
Definition: Starting torque refers to the torque generated by the motor during the starting process from zero speed to a certain speed. It is usually the first measurable torque when the motor starts.
Features: Starting torque is related to factors such as the motor's load, working environment, rotor design and motor starting method.
Starting torque is usually smaller than stall torque, especially when the motor speed increases gradually during the starting process, the torque will gradually decrease.
Significance: Starting torque is the torque required for the motor to start and gradually accelerate to the normal operating speed.
Main differences:
Torque size: Stall torque is usually larger than starting torque, because stall torque is the maximum torque that the motor can produce when it is completely stationary, while starting torque is the torque generated by the motor accelerating from a stationary state to a certain speed.
Timing: Stall torque occurs at the moment of motor starting, when the rotor is completely stationary, while starting torque is the torque generated after the motor starts to start and the rotor gradually accelerates.
Application impact: Stall torque is usually used to measure whether the motor can overcome the inertia of the load and other starting resistances at the time of starting, while starting torque pays more attention to the continuous ability of the motor during the starting process.
In summary, both stall torque and starting torque are key parameters of motor performance. Stall torque is mainly used to describe the instantaneous ability of the motor at starting, while starting torque describes the continuous ability of the motor to maintain during the starting process.
