There are two types of winding short circuits

The probability of motor failure is not too high, but due to the influence of various internal and external factors, heat and smoke often appear during operation. Generally speaking, the smoking motor may have burned out, but it may not have burned out. In many cases, the motor is not completely damaged and can be used with a little cleaning. However, if it is not handled properly, a small problem may become a big problem. What kind of treatment is more appropriate? First, we should understand the phenomenon and cause of smoking, and then we can determine how to deal with it.
If the stator and rotor windings are broken, before the trial run, the short circuit and grounding points should be covered with insulating paper, coated with insulating paint, or loosened to confirm that the fault is eliminated; if the belt is too tight, you can loosen it appropriately to eliminate excess tension.
1. The main causes and smoking phenomena during motor operation
1. Heating of bearing parts
The lack of oil in the bearing, the friction between the inner ring of the bearing and the bearing cover, or the tight fit between the bearing and the bearing sleeve may cause the bearing parts to heat up and smoke. The phenomenon is that the bearing balls, inner and outer rings are discolored and black, the grease is discolored or dry, and the bearing sleeve is deformed.
2. Stator and rotor rub against each other
Improper manufacturing process, loose fit between the base and the end cover, excessive bearing wear, or eccentricity of the inner ring of the stator and the outer ring of the rotor itself may cause friction between the stator and the rotor, smoke, and the winding insulation may also wear, which may cause short circuits and ground faults.
3. Overload, low voltage, or large three-phase voltage difference
The load on the motor exceeds the rated power or the voltage is too low, so the three-phase current increases at the same time and the coil temperature rises. In severe cases, the motor may become hot and smoke. Unbalanced three-phase voltage can also cause the motor to overheat and smoke. However, the smoking motor coil is unlikely to burn out completely immediately, but the insulation layer of the motor coil will be damaged to varying degrees and can usually continue to be used.
4. Power interruption
If one phase of the three-phase network is interrupted while the motor is running, the motor can continue to run. The star-connected motor has a rotating two-phase current, and there is no current in the de-energized single-phase winding. After the motor is connected with △-, the current of one phase increases and the motor makes a humming sound. At this time, the greater the load, the easier it is to smoke in a short time, which usually causes the motor to burn out.
5. Stator winding short circuit
There are two types of winding short circuits
phase short circuit and turn short circuit. Phase short circuit includes inter-layer short circuit at the end of the winding, short circuit between the upper and lower coils in the slot, and phase short circuit caused by insulation damage of the winding connection wire or lead wire. Turn short circuit includes coil turn short circuit or pole winding coil short circuit, resulting in winding short circuit. The internal cause of winding short circuit is the insulation defect of the Sima motor, for example, the size of the insulation material of the phase isolator is not required in the end, the position of the insulation pad is wrong, or the insulation pad itself is defective, which can easily lead to the final phase short circuit. Insufficient thickness of the insulation material in the double-layer winding slot or offset pad may cause phase-to-phase short circuit or phase-to-pole winding short circuit, poor insulation of the wire itself, or careless work or poor tools when inserting the wire (also known as "down lead"), and insulation damage can easily lead to turn-to-turn short circuit. The external short circuit is caused by motor overload, overvoltage, undervoltage, single-phase operation, etc., which will cause insulation aging or damage during operation, resulting in winding short circuit fault.
After the winding is short-circuited, a large circulating current is generated in the short-circuited winding, causing the winding to generate high heat, causing the insulation to discolor, become brittle, smoke, or even burn, and emit a burning smell. If the number of short-circuit turns is too large, the motor will make abnormal noise.
6. Stator coil grounding
After the stator winding is damaged, the wire contacts the iron core or frame. If the motor casing is not reliably grounded, the casing will be energized, endangering personal safety; if the motor casing is reliably grounded, the fuse may melt or generate grounding current, so the coil will heat up and the smoke will burn the motor winding.
7. Stator winding open circuit
The winding open circuit mainly occurs in the welding heads of each winding and the welding heads of the motor leads. The desoldering caused by poor process leads to an open circuit. In addition, due to winding short circuit and grounding fault, the winding wire will burn out, and short circuit faults will occur from time to time.
