A DC motor is a motor that converts DC electrical energy into mechanical energy. According to the different excitation methods, DC motors can be divided into two categories: separately excited DC motors and shunt-excited DC motors.
Separately excited DC motor: In this type of motor, the field winding has no direct electrical connection with the armature winding, and the field winding is powered by an independent DC power supply. This type of motor has a large starting torque and good speed stability, and is suitable for applications that require a large starting torque and low speed operation, such as large-scale traction systems and some special applications.
Shunt-excited DC motor: The field winding of a shunt motor is connected in parallel with the armature winding and is powered by the same power supply. This type of motor is characterized by the same armature current and excitation current, so it has a high efficiency and power factor, and is suitable for applications that require high efficiency and good speed regulation performance, such as machine tools and some automation equipment.
When selecting a DC motor, it should be determined according to the actual application requirements:
When a large starting torque and low speed stability are required, a separately excited DC motor can be selected.
When a high efficiency and good speed regulation performance are required, a shunt-excited DC motor can be selected.
In addition, factors such as the size, weight, noise, maintenance requirements, and cost of the motor need to be considered. In some special applications, factors such as the motor's response speed, precision control, environmental adaptability (such as temperature, humidity, vibration, etc.) and service life may also need to be considered.
